Let’s call it – BULLSHIT! What team will be next … the Yankees, the Patriots or the Cowboys perhaps? Seriously, who gets to definitively determine what is and isn’t offensive? After all, Cowboys killed Redskins, so … hey, jus sayin. The Washington Redskins should be able to keep their name – their BRAND (even as shitty as they’ve been – and hope for a better season this year.
One thing is for certain – this has definitely been a year of precedent when it comes to team owners and the legal system – just ask Donald Sterling (owner of Los Angeles Clippers basketball team … and known racist). Now it seems as though the courts are keeping the momentum going and the owner of the Washington Redskins, Dan Snyder, after eight decades of branding his team, might have to take the biggest “L” his franchise has ever had. IF this name was such a big deal, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office SHOULD NOT HAVE ever approved the initial trademark registration of the team or, at the very least, canceled the trademark registration of the Washington Redskins long before now based on the team name disparaging Native Americans. REALLY?! By whose standards. Yes, this has been a longstanding dispute … one that continues to make lawyers money, yet eventually gets shut down in court. Aren’t there better ways that our legal system can serve our country?
The federal trademark law outlaws the registration of language that holds groups or individuals in contempt or disrepute. “The recognition that this racial designation based on skin color is disparaging to Native Americans” is demonstrated “by the near complete drop-off in usage of ‘redskins’ as a reference to Native Americans beginning in the 1960’s,” the board said.
Snyder claims that the team was named – YEARS AGO – to HONOR Native Americans, regardless of the record that disputes that claim. So basically Snyder is being called liar. Why? He is being aligned with the past because an original Washington Redskins owner was a bigot. THIS IS WHY RACISM WILL NEVER END!! Leave the past behind and #movethefuckon.

“We are Redskins Nation,” Snyder wrote in the letter that began arriving at the homes of season-ticket holders Wednesday, “and we owe it to our fans and coaches and players, past and present, to preserve that heritage.” Snyder said the disputed term “is more than a name we have called our football team for over eight decades. It is a symbol of everything we stand for: strength, courage, pride, and respect — the same values we know guide Native Americans and which are embedded throughout their rich history as the original Americans.”
